Who is Lord Dhanvantari?

In the context of celebrating Dhanvantari Jayanti, this incident occurs that once as a result of the indecent behavior of Devraj Indra, Maharishi Durvasa had cursed all the three worlds to be devoid of Sri, due to which Ashtalakshmi went to her world. Again, the deities, anxious for the establishment of Shri in the three worlds, went to the Trinity and asked for a solution to this crisis, Lord Shiva suggested the churning of the ocean to the deities, which was gladly accepted by the deities and the demons.

For churning the ocean, Mandarachal mountain was made a churner and Vasuki, the king of snakes, was made a rope for the churner. The demons were directed towards Vasuki’s mouth and the gods towards his tail and the churning of the ocean began. Fourteen major gems were born from the churning of the ocean, in which Lord Dhanvantari himself appeared as the fourteenth gem holding the pot of nectar in his hands.

Lord Dhanvantari is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The four-armed Lord Dhanvantari holds Ayurveda scriptures in one hand, medicine pot in the second, herbs in the third and conch in the fourth.
